Scene Six

(Nighttime falls on the breakroom. It is empty. Sounds at the door.)

REGGIE.

DEZ.

(Offstage.) I need to get in there and there’s not a damn thing you’re going to do to stop me. You don’t like to listen. You never like to follow any damn rules. Get out of my way, DEZ. I swear to God you better get out of my way.

(Offstage.) What the hell you tryin’ to go through my stuff for, hunh? I ain’t see no warrant. You wanna go through my shit, you gotta get somethin’ or else you gonna have to walk through me. I ain’t movin’ nowhere.

(DEZ opens the door with REGGIE at his heels.)

DEZ. I swear to God, you need a warrant.

REGGIE. I don’t need a warrant while we’re on work grounds. This isn’t your personal house, DEZ. That’s what you don’t understand.

DEZ. You don’t know what I understand.

REGGIE. I’m going to ask you one more time DEZ. Open your bag, or else I’m getting the clippers and we’re cutting this lock.

DEZ. What the hell am I? A criminal?

REGGIE. Better not be.

DEZ. Why you gotta act like such a bitch, man?!

REGGIE. Watch your gotdamn mouth, DEZ!

(FAYE and SHANITA enter the breakroom hastily.)

FAYE. What’s going on in here?

SHANITA. Can hear ya’ll all the way down the hall.

DEZ. This nigga wanna test me -

REGGIE. I’m not yo’ nigga -

DEZ. - Cuz I didn’t want him going through my bag.

REGGIE. Because you’re being insubordinate.

FAYE. Why’re you going through his bag?

REGGIE. Do you all even read any of the signs I post? Mandatory stop and search. Employees are asked to empty their bags when exiting the building -

DEZ. At random -

REGGIE. It happens to everyone.

DEZ. And today it only happened to happen to me.

REGGIE. It was a random search, DEZ. We’ve been hit a lot lately. It’s perfectly fair.

DEZ. Fair to who?

REGGIE. Fair to everyone! I put up a notice. It wasn’t out of the blue. You act like it was out of the blue.

SHANITA. I got stopped yesterday. Just opened my bag and showed ’em it wasn’t full of nothin’ but pre-natal pills. No big deal. They let me out and I went home.

DEZ. That ain't what this is about.

REGGIE. What is it about then DEZ, hunh?

DEZ. You know what this is about FAYE.

FAYE. FAYE? How’d I get into this?

DEZ. Cuz you always protecting this dude -

FAYE. Don’t bring no FAYE into this.

(The sound of radio static interrupts.)

VOICE THROUGH STATIC. Status Report. All units in?

(REGGIE grabs the radio on his hip.)

REGGIE. (To radio.) Handling a dilemma. Status update in two minutes. (Shift.) DEZ, stop stalling. I’ve got to report back. Get past your foolish pride and open your bag. Or I’m going in the locker. It’s that simple.

DEZ. I ain’t opening shit.

SHANITA. DEZ just open the bag!

DEZ. Ain’t right.

FAYE. (To REGGIE.) What you need to know about him? Tell me and I’ll school you. Been watching him come and go every damn day.

REGGIE. It’s simple protocol. I look in DEZ’s bag. He’s cleared and goes home. It doesn’t have to be this difficult.
